Anglers who find the best fishing often anticipate when the right conditions will come together. Hours are 7 am till 5pm. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. Not a dozen hook ups for a morning effort, but at least a few that might include a couple steelhead or a couple browns. Be aware the east side Oak Orchard River Point Breeze boat launch is closed for construction (new ramp) so just go the west side launch.. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. Over all though, the brown trout action on the Oak is tough. Look for better rivermouth and lower river action each day on cool or wet weather. Some Lake Effect Snow showers has amounted to a few more inches of fluffy accumulation on top of the 1-2 ft previous snow. Without overflow levels now, some might be inclined to call it only slightly high. Since its still busy with plenty of Kings around, anglers need to carefully spot the places where the browns are shadowing the Kings. Many still in good green shape with some old moldies now on Halloween zombie patrol downstream. Not much precip was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. You can see the Canal drainage influence in the stained color but Canal release flows sure look more tempered in the smaller tribs then say the Oak. See more info on their. A little rise in flows and some stain to the water makes for a willing biter with this nearly 20 pound hen steelhead. Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. A few pools or slots may hide a fish that didnt take the drop back trip. Other area smaller tribs are at med and slightly stained. Not a whole lot of reports coming back in for the Oak but now with flows that are a little more easily drifted guys should be into a few browns or steelhead. Going SW or just by the nature of the LES bands having moved around, accumulations will be more in different nearby areas. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good. Get the drift or swing down and checked and slowed a bit and you can find a head shaking steelhead on the take. Cooling weather and water will also help bring on better brown trout and steelhead action and the area is not likely to suffer thru any more real warm weather now that we are well into October.
